SKIING MAGAZINE 50TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE January Issue 1999

TOP 25 MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE OF THE LAST 50 YEARS

JEANNIE THOREN    In the early ‘80s, Jeannie Thoren argued that women are "not small men" and that they need ski gear that takes into account their anatomical differences: wider hips, a lower center of gravity, shaplier calves. After fighting for years to get the powers that be (that would be men) to listen, she struck out on her own, traveling to ski resorts with a van full of equipment, helping thousands of women to ski better by making their equipment better: heel lifts, better-fitting boots, etc. Eventually the manufacturers took note, and today thanks in large part to Jeannie’s ongoing mission, women can choose from dozens of models of female-specific skis and boots.
